The government Sat Phones Australia Scheme was set up to help people who need a satellite phone to acquire one at a reasonable price that they can afford. It has just been extended to last until June 2014 and is helpful to people in all walks of life.
If you are travelling within Australia and expect to spend more than 6 months outside of normal mobile range over a 2 year period, you may be eligible for a 50% grant. The 6 months does not have to be consecutive. This will give you up to $700 off the price of your handset.
If you reside in an area that does not receive mobile phone coverage you may be eligible for the 85% grant. This will give you up to $1000 off the price of your handset. You will need to provide proof of address in the form of a utility bill etc.
If you work in a remote area without mobile phone coverage you may be eligible for a 50% grant. This will give you up to $700 off the price of the handset. This also applies to small business with less than 20 people who work there. You may be able to get 2 subsidies under a business name.
An explorer-700-antenna-cable-qn-tnc-100-m when in a remote area is a must have. Do your research and work out which satellite phone is best for you, once you have come to a decision you need to find a provider to purchase through. The provider must be an approved provider that works with the government subsidy scheme. You then just fill in the forms, along with any information the government may require. You should hear back from the department of broadband regarding your application within 10 working days. If you do not hear back in this time frame and need your approval through urgently you can always call to see how your application process is going.
